Within Mexican Christian folk belief, La Santa Muerte (“Holy Death”) holds a singular and powerful presence. Depicted as a female skeleton bearing a scythe, often cloaked in red, white, green, or black and crowned, she embodies both mortality and protection. Devotees turn to her for love, fortune, safety, and health, offering roses, cigars, or tequila in acts of devotion that are at once intimate and ritualistic.
It is from this cultural and symbolic sphere that Berlin-based guitarist Kalle Kalima and Vienna-based drummer Mareike Wiening draw the name for their duo. The two artists merge guitar and drums into a tightly interwoven sonic language. Their music evolves through interaction – raw, immediate, and unrestrained – unfolding with an intensity that bridges experimental rock and contemporary jazz.
What emerges is a sound that feels both elemental and charged: rhythmic, textural, and at times incantatory. A music that does not merely reference ritual, but enacts it – oscillating between force and fragility, structure and abandon, the physical and the transcendent.
