THE APOLLO OF AMSTERDAM
1621 was the year in which one of the most influential composers of Europe passed away – Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1561–1621).
With his knowledge and artistry, he had inspired an entire generation of musicians. This artistic exchange took place in Amsterdam. 1621 was also the year in which one of his students – Samuel Scheidt (1587–1654) – achieved public success as a composer by publishing “Ludi musici”, a collection of entertaining dance movements and canzonas that contrasted with the usual austere church compositions.
In an obituary for the master, who died in Amsterdam on 19 October 1621, we learn how highly he was esteemed by his contemporaries. Peter Philips is said to have referred to him as Phoebus, or Apollo. Willem Baudaert, the author of “Memorien ofte Cort verhael der Gedenck-weerdighste soo Kerckelijke als Wereltlijcke Gheschiedenissen van Nederland”, even called him the most renowned among the finest and most skilful organists.
The recorder ensemble “AS TIME GOES BY – A New Consort of Music” from Vienna presents this music in a very exiting and insightful interpretation, which brings the nuances and details of these unknown compositions to light.
